Last week, I reacquainted myself with my 2013 New Years Resolution and started back at the gym... better late than never! I joined at Lifetime in Centreville and I just found out that they are doing a "Commitment Day" 5k on January 1st at 11am at Fairfax Corner. A few weeks back, I caught onto the buzz of eating clean. I actually liked this green shake - and so did my 4 year old - so I am sharing the recipe with you :)
Here is what I threw together:
3 cups spinach
1 tbsp all natural peanut butter
1/2 cup water (you can adjust this depending on your blender and your preference of thickness)
1 - 1 1/2 cups ice
I also tried making the same recipe and adding 1/2 of an avocado. I didn't like the creamy consistency... but you can adjust to your preference.
Shout out to one of my readers, Amanda, for the idea!
Getting back on track after a long, enjoyable weekend at my parents' house. And by enjoyable, I mean completely off my diet.
I know that for the health of my child (and my sanity), I need to get him outside playing, running, biking -- just MOVING -- every day. Sometimes we struggle on those days when it's rainy, or more recently, code red/orange with excessive heat and humidity. We decided to check out Adventure to Fitness after they sent us some of their DVDs.
The program kept B engaged and moving for the entire 30 minutes as he ran through the jungle, climbed mountains, and was chased through a crocodile river. I even joined in on the fun and did it with him... and I was out of breath - ha! Who knew jogging/running in place could be so exhausting? Meanwhile, (you can see in the bottom right corner) dad enouraged us while playing Wreck-It Ralph on the iPad.
B actually added the Adventure to Fitness to his DVD collection and requests to "watch" it all the time now. I think it's a great program to have around -- happy to have him watch a show that gets him moving rather than just sitting and snacking! Why can't Oprah or Andy Cohen do that for me?
Adventure to Fitness is an award-winning children's fitness program that is designed to keep kids healthy, active, and learning in a fun and easy way. The program is currently used in over 75,000 classrooms and over 11,000 homes, making it the #1 educational fitness program of any kind in America. It is a winner of the Family Choice Award and is Parents’ Choice Approved.
You can find out more information at the Adventure to Fitness Store or connect via Facebook and Twitter.

Getting "Down & Dirty" Is One True Challenge and for a Worthy Cause
Mud and lots of it! That’s a guarantee at the Merrell Down & Dirty Obstacle Race Presented by Subaru Sunday, July 21th at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland. Produced by California-based Michael Epstein Sports Productions, Inc. (MESP), this 5K and 10K off-road competition is set to have military-style obstacles, commanding cargo climbs, wild water crossings, enormous mud pits! Thousands of athletes from the Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. area are expected to register for the event!
The Matchbox® Adventure Kids Dash, for ages 4 to 6 & The Adventure Kids 1 Mile, for ages 7 to 13
In addition to providing an exhilarating and challenging adventure for participants, the race is partnered with Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that seeks to lift the morale of service men and women deployed to hostile territories around the world by sending personalized care packages and letters of appreciation. MESP has already raised over $130,000 for the organization and is committed to raise $130,000 more to support the efforts and mission of this volunteer organization.
The style of the course and the charity involved lends itself towards military and public safety personnel in addition to athletes of all skill levels seeking a unique race atmosphere. Michael Epstein, President of MESP, Inc., expressed the importance of such a partnership, "It’s the least we can do for such a tremendous organization and the military personnel we are so fortunate to stand behind. We remain committed to those protecting our country as we recognize the value they create and the sacrifice they have made – we hope others will join our efforts."
Carolyn Blashek, founder of Operation Gratitude, echoes the eagerness to partner with the Merrell Down & Dirty Obstacle Race Presented by Subaru, "It is encouraging to see that MESP shares our same passion for supporting our troops – they deserve all the gratitude we can give them."
Participants will receive a tech tee and finisher medal for completing the race and a chance to celebrate afterwards at an on-site expo, featuring sponsors, such as, Merrell, Subaru, LÄRABAR, and Paul Mitchell. Kids are also encouraged to join in the activities with their own specialized course! The Adventure Kids series presented by John Paul Mitchell Systems calls kids ages 4 – 6 to participate in the Matchbox 100 yard dash, and kids 7 – 13 to participate in a 1 mile run. Both encounter fun, tike-size obstacles and a slimy belly crawl through the mud pit! All Adventure Kids racers will receive a race-bib, finisher medal, and an event t-shirt.

I just realized that we're only two weeks away from our neighborhood pool opening this season and I panicked with fear just thinking about getting into my swimsuit! #SuburbanPeopleProblems.
So, today, I met with my friend, John Casto of Action Fitness. With a spinach shake in hand, John talked me into actually committing to a goal. I took the plunge and signed up for personal training and his Women's Only Fitness Bootcamp starting on Monday (OH NO!). I figure by posting here that you, my lovely/supportive/encouraging readers, will keep me accountable for at least the first month. My goal is to lose 5lbs in one month - totally doable, right?
I was thinking - since I'm going to be doing this challenge, wouldn't some of you like to do it with me?! Please! We can even go for margaritas after bootcamp :) I threw this idea at John and he said he'd extend ALL OF MY READERS a FREE ONE MONTH TRIAL for the Women's Only Fitness Bootcamp in Fairfax! WOO HOO!
Plus, FIVE WINNERS will receive a FREE personal training session to get you started. How fantastic is that? It will be way more fun if we do it together!
I posted on my facebook page last week about checking out botox. I'm 27 and not quite wrinkly, but I read online that getting botox can help enhance arches in your eyebrows and make you look more refreshed and rested (which I totally need!). I looked into it and met with Dr. Fadi Nukta at NOVA Plastic Surgery. Surprisingly, Dr. Nukta agreed that I didn't really need any botox at my age and I better come back in a few years. However, he told me about their current promotion and I thought I'd share it with you all since many of you chatted that you'd be into botox or other services.
If you book an appointment for a consultation on a Wednesday during April or May, NOVA Plastic Surgery is offering FREE Botox to new patients. This isn't a giveaway from my site or a gimmick to purchase other services to qualify.
"If you book a complimentary consultation on a Wednesday you will receive a FREE Botox treatment for one area of your face, 20 units of Botox (a $400 value). During your consultation you will meet board certified plastic surgeon, Fadi Nukta, MD, who will discuss how the Botox treatment can help you. If you are medically suitable you will receive your Botox treatment that same day."
Dr. Nukta told me that he specializes in giving patients natural results that do not change who they are. He didn't even try to upsell me on services I didn't need - even though those services were the reason I was there in the first place. I say check it out if you're thinking about it!
For more info, visit: FreeBotoxWednesday.com or call NOVA Plastic Surgery at (703) 574-2588. To learn more about Dr. Nukta and his practice please visit novaplasticsurgery.com.
*I did not receive free (or any) services in exchange for this post - It's just too good of a deal not to share! Also, I am not a medical professional and I am not recommending any medical service. C'mon people, I have an English degree :)
